The Washington Capitals’ impressive home and overall point streaks came to an end Tuesday night, as they were defeated 3-1 by the Calgary Flames at Capital One Arena. Despite the loss, there were notable achievements for a couple of Capitals players.
Alex Ovechkin scored his 30th goal of the season on a power play in the third period, marking the 883rd goal of his NHL career. This achievement marks his 19th season with 30 or more goals, an NHL record, and places him 12 goals behind Wayne Gretzky’s all-time record. He is now the fourth player in NHL history to achieve 30 goals at 39 years or older. John Carlson assisted on Ovechkin’s goal, extending his assist streak to nine games, a career high, and tying the second-longest assist streak by a defenseman aged 35 or older.

The Capitals struggled in the first period, which proved to be the decisive factor in the game. Coach Spencer Carbery described the first period as “terrible” and “as bad a period as we’ve played all year.” The Capitals managed only five shots on goal in the first period, while the Flames took a 2-0 lead with goals from Martin Pospisil and Matt Coronato.
In the third period, Ovechkin scored on a power play, assisted by John Carlson and Dylan Strome, bringing the Capitals within one goal. However, Jonathan Huberdeau scored for the Flames, restoring their two-goal lead and sealing the victory.
This loss ended the Capitals’ 16-game home point streak and their eight-game overall point streak. It was their first regulation loss at home since November 23 and their first regulation loss in 30 days.
The Calgary Flames’ victory marked a positive start to their six-game road trip. Flames coach Ryan Huska praised his team’s start, courageous shot-blocking, fourth line performance, and goaltending. The Flames’ performance on this trip could influence their strategy at the upcoming NHL trade deadline.
